Upper Vallecito Creek-Los Piños River | Packraft Linkup
4-day route in the San Juan Range's Weminuche Wilderness. Los Piños River (~550 cfs) from Vallecito Simulator gorge through Lake Creek gorge, followed by a hike past Emerald Lake to reach upper Vallecito Creek (~500-450 cfs) at Rock Creek, paddled through the warm-up boofs for the classic gorge run. So far, separately, Packrafts have only descended the full Vallecito gorge at flows of 150 to 325 cfs.

Upper Cherry Creek zone packrafting

Throwback to 2021 and a 9 day trip in the Emigrant wilderness running Upper Cherry and tribs. Approx. 400-200 cfs on the gage. The previous year at very low flow we ran most drops in the standard upper cherry section aside from Dead Bear and Cherry Falls, but with these flows almost all of the bigger drops were portaged until red rock gorge was passed.

I live at the paria canyon and buckskin gulch area. All I have to say is I have to admire your intrepid insanity, but this is an extremely dangerous endeavor, and I would encourage others to NOT do this. In my opinion you should go to Vegas and gamble, because you are EXTREMELY lucky.

Been following along for years now. Best remote packrafting vids on the intertubes. What an epic trip! Ive been packrafting for about 10 years, mostly to link up canyon systems but now getting into more and more whitewater. Would love more info on your gear and setup ideas. Paddle, pfd choices, rigging decision etc. Do you have a blog or any videos that go through those elements?
Not extensively, but I did list some of the gear choices for this specific trip in a blog link in the description. That is something I'll work on later this year though, an explanation of gear choices. Thanks!
@@jeffreycreamer Amazing. I've watched your rig transform a few times and get more and more capable. I have a love hate relationship with all of my stuff. Backpacks, boats, paddles etc. Be really interesting to read your theories on why the switches, different boats for different trips etc. Keep up the great work. Never thought places like North Fork of Bull Lake was attainable in a PR. But it turns out these things are the perfect craft for such deep and remote adventures!

I think I've been into upper vallecito 6 or 7 times now, if that's a measure. Definitely more wood now than Ive seen before, but the best upper gorge section is wood free for the first time in 10 years at least.
On Vallecito, did you paddle past the point where the trail first drops down to the creek?
Just barely - there are two good drops there where you can still take out above entrance falls.

This was done in a gnarwhal. I almost exclusively use a valkyrie for whitewater now.

Alpackas HD skirts are pretty good - i havent seen any meangingful damage, implosion is very rare, but the on/off action over the coaming isnt perfect. IR is about to release an alpacka skirt, that one will be super legit.
